Mike Lawler's 2024 Earmarks: Republicans Only
A review of 2024 earmarks from Mike Lawler's website shows that Lawler cares the most for the people who voted for him. Some $59,000,000 in earmarks were proposed for fiscal year 2024. Of that total, 68% went to areas of NY17 that voted for him, while less than half that went to areas that did not.
A county-by-county analysis shows an even heavier bias, with Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess counties receiving almost 80% of all requests; over $46,000,000 in total. Those counties voted for Lawler. Westchester county, which did not vote for him, received about four times less than the Lawler counties.
Here are some of the highlights for requests totaling $5,000,000 or more:
Town of Ramapo Safer Neighborhoods Project: $18,000,000
According to the request, the funding would be used for "installation of sidewalks in the Town of Ramapo to improve pedestrian safety. Ramapo is home to one of the largest Orthodox and Hasidic Jewish populations in the country, with many of these individuals walking to shul on Saturdays." Looking at the election results, this area represents his most ardent supporters.
Putnam County Pedestrian Improvement Project: $7,500,000
Per the request, "The funding would be used for the replacement and installation of sidewalks in Putnam County. It would also result in additional mobility options near senior centers so that Putnam’s Golden Generation has access to amenities in towns around the county." Putnam county leaned heavily in favor of Lawler and is one of the reasons he won. Over $14,000,000 is earmarked for Putnam County.
Rockland Sewer Screenings Improvement Project: $5,000,000
"The funding would involve the replacement of mechanical type bar screens which have exceeded their effectiveness." Rockland County skewed heavily in favor of Lawler in the 2022 election.
Annsville Sewers Project: $5,000,000
"The funding supports constructing a central sewer that would provide sewer and water service to the Annsville Creek section of the Town of Cortlandt."
A map of the requests by county is shown below, and the full details for all projects can be found on Lawler's website.
