About our District
New York's 17th congressional district is located in the southern part of New York state, spanning Rockland, Putnam, northern Westchester and southern Dutchess counties. The current representative is Republican Congressman Mike Lawler of Pearl River. Lawler previously represented New York's 97th Assembly district.
The district was redrawn in May of 2022 after a previous map was rejected by the New York Court of Appeals. The redistricting resulted in some representatives being drawn out of their districts entirely, and significant scrambling late in the election cycle. Lawler narrowly defeated Democratic incumbent, Sean Patrick Maloney, pouring millions of dollars into negative campaign ads depicting gun violence on the streets of New York City, implying that Maloney was responsible because of his stance on bail reform.
